The Type 99 was introduced in 1939 and was chambered in the 7.7x58mm Arisaka, which was a superior round the older 6.5x50 Arisaka. The new type 99 was envisioned to replace the older Type 38 but never achieved this. The Type 99 and Type 38 rifles both served side by side in the Second World War. The Type 99 was built in numbers exceeding 3.4 million.
