Opinion: Unstoppable, How the Gun has Won.
I’ve been doing quite a bit of thinking of late, about our 2nd Amendment Rights. As the old saying goes, “the firearm is a tool, no better or worse than the man who carries it”. In the wake of stunning pro-gun victories in the elections of November of last, I wonder have we as gun owners convinced the other side that it is not the gun that is the issue? Quite frankly, I don’t think we have. And I don’t think we ever will.
That said, I don’t think we necessarily need to change the minds of the progressive anti-gun crowd. I think as a nation, the lines are drawn and there are few people willing to cross over to either side. Personally, I don’t feel obligated to try to win anti-gunners over to our side. I think you shouldn’t feel obligated either.
We will never convince the foaming at the mouth, gun control crowd that firearms are not the problem. We will never convince them it is the human condition, not the tool, that commits heinous acts. We will never convince them background checks do nothing to curb violence. And we don’t have to, not anymore.
Why? Because we are winning.
The Progressive dream of firearm confiscation is impossible to implement, especially in 2017. In the mid-1990s, there were an estimated 300 million firearms in the United States. A statistic still erroneously quoted again and again. Based on research of the sheer number of firearms sold, the number is over 550 million, perhaps as high as 700 million. There is no way of knowing.
The AR-15, once the derided “evil black rifle”, is the cherished “erector set” for adults. An estimated 12-20 million are now in civilian hands. There are over 200 companies alone who produce AR-15s. And they are not the only “black” or tactical rifle flying off shelves. From AKs, to CETMEs and M1As, semi autos have supplanted bolt actions as the most popular rifles in the hands of US citizens.
Handgun laws have begun to strongly favor the individual citizen’s right to self-defense. Three decades ago, few states had provisions for the carrying of handguns, not every single state by law must allow their citizens a way to conceal carry or open carry handguns. The walls of stupidity are falling, as more and more people are buying handguns and getting their carry permits. Several states have adopted Constitutional Carry, where their citizens have the right to carry for self-defense without a permit, concealed or open.
Added to this is the “build it yourself” crowd. From AK-47s, AKMs, AK-74s, AR-15, AR-10, to M1 Garands, people now build guns in their basements, garages, and so forth. And not just by the hundreds, but thousands.
Gun control is now an impossibility. Civil War, now that’s a different story…
